February YA-Hoo

Come out at 6:30 on February 8th for a sweet surprise - our joint Valentine's Day party with the kids! We'll decorate cupcakes, make cards, and play some fun games.

We'll also be having Jeopardy Night at 6:30 on February 29th - you don't get a February 29th every year, so be sure to brush up on your trivia! I hope we'll see you there.

January YA-Hoo - And New Webpage!

Happy New Year! We'll be kicking off 2012 with a night of T-shirt decorating on Wednesday, January 11th. Please stop by the front desk to sign up! Anyone who hasn't signed up can still come, but they must provide their own T-shirt. We'll also have another game night on Wednesday, January 25th. Bring your favorite board and card games!

The new year will also bring some changes to our webpage. The votes are in, and YA-Hoo! is now on Facebook. We also have an email list. If you'd like to join, please send an email to yahoo@whartonlibrary.org.

December YA-Hoo!

We have two fun programs scheduled for this month:

On Wednesday, December 14th, and 6:30 we'll be making gingerbread houses. Come out for hot cocoa and a deliciously fun and festive craft!

And the votes are in! At movie night on Wednesday, December 28th, at 5:30, we'll watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II!

Tin Can Lanterns

It's too bad about the snow, but you made some really awesome pumpkins at our last meeting! Coming up we have another fun program -- Game Night! Come by at 6:30 on Wednesday, November 9th to play uno, charades, apples to apples, Harry Potter trivial pursuit, zombie outbreak, wink werewolf, and more! Feel free to bring a friend; well have lost of snacks and a good time!

Ooky-Spooky Pumpkins!

Don't forget that next Wednesday (10/26) at 6:30 is our pumpkin painting! There's a sign-up sheet at the front desk with four spots still open. We'll have cider and a Halloween snack. Wear something that you don't mind getting paint on!

If you haven't signed up by Tuesday but would still like to come, you're welcome to attend, but you need to bring your own pumpkin.

October YA-Hoo

Good news! The attendees at our last meeting suggested that we meet more often, so YA-Hoo will now be meeting at 6:30 on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. We have some fun stuff planned for this month. On October 12th you can join us for duct tape crafts, and on October 26th we'll have Halloween snacks and you can paint a spooky pumpkin to celebrate the holiday!

Hey, YA-Hoos! I hope you've all had a good first week of school. Remember that our monthly programs start in just one week! Banned Books Week is the last week of September, so we'll be having a banned book hunt on Wednesday, September 14th, at 6:30. We'll also have snacks and talk about activities you might like to do over the next few months. Come learn why libraries oppose censorship and see whether any of your favorite books have been banned!

Summer reading is over, but during the school year YA-Hoo! will still meet once a month! Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 14th, at 6:30; we'll do a banned book hunt, have a snack, and talk about activities you might like to do. Hopefully I'll see you all there!

South America and Outer Space

This week is our final week of summer reading, and it's going to be a busy one! There are two volunteer opportunities – the kids' program at 1:00 on Tuesday, August 2nd, and the kids' party at 6:30 on Thursday, August 4th. Volunteers are needed at the party to help run the games, so please come if you're able. Also on Thursday is our usual YA-Hoo! meeting; stop by at 3:00 to make Guatemalan worry dolls and try a tasty South American snack! While you're at the library, you can check out this week's quiz to see if you can tell science fact from science fiction.

At 5:00 on Friday, August 5th, we'll be having our YA-Hoo! Alien Party! You'll have the library to yourselves as we do a craft and have pizza and snacks. There will be a sign-up sheet in the library starting Monday so I can get an idea of how many cupcakes to bring; as long as you have attended at least one YA-Hoo! meeting this summer, you're welcome to pop your pet martian into your flying saucer and hover over for some out-of-this-world fun!

Australia and New Zealand

Our schedule this week is a little different than usual; our YA-Hoo! meeting will be on Tuesday, July 26th, at 5:30, because it's YA-Hoo! Movie Night! We'll be watching Whale Rider, an excellent film adaptation of a novel by Witi Ihimaera, a prominent Māori writer. (Parents, please be advised that this film is rated PG-13.)

Also on Tuesday is the kids' program at 1:00, and there will be a second volunteer opportunity on Thursday, July 28th, at 6:30; we'll welcome back the popular Rizzo's Reptiles, and it's sure to be a great evening!

Remember that the quiz on Australia's many amazing animals closes on Wednesday night, and try to stay cool during this heat wave.

Come celebrate the Japanese festival Tanabata with us at 3:00 on Thursday, July 21st! We'll make lanterns to decorate our wishing trees and try some interesting foods. Our sudoku quiz also closes on Wednesday night.

We have two volunteer opportunities this week: Straka's Dinosaur Show at 6:30 on Monday, July 18th, and the kids' program at 1:00 on Thursday, July 21st.

It's hot, so remember to drink lots of water, and happy reading!

Africa

Hey, Ya-Hoos! This week we're looking at Africa, and in a bit of interesting news, Africa has a new country! Sudan has ended its civil war with a peace agreement, and North Sudan and South Sudan are now officially independent of one another; you can see a map with the new border here.

For our activities this week, we have two volunteer opportunities: Tom Yurasits' Magic Show at 6:30 on Tuesday, July 12th, and the kids' program at 1:00 on Thursday, July 14th. Also on Thursday is our Ya-Hoo! program; come make a mask and try an African fruit salad!

The Africa quiz closes on Wednesday night, and remember – a Latin-based orthography is a way to write a language using the Roman alphabet.

Our registration party, featuring Jack's Petting Zoo, will be at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, June 29th. Come sign up, and join us on Thursday, June 30th, at 3 PM for our first Ya-Hoo! meeting of the summer! We'll play travel bingo, decorate bags, and have a tasty snack. Our first quiz will also open Wednesday night; the topic is Europe Trivia, and the Ya-Hoo! who does best will win a prize!

Hey! We had a great program on Thursday making some magnetic poetry! We've got the schedule for the next few events happening this winter:

Last YaHoo Meeting of the school year!

Hello all! Coming up in May is our last YaHoo meeting of the school year. Originally we were going to do some prep work (helping me get ready!) for summer reading. There may be some of this but we are going to have a bunch of different crafts ready for you to try out! So join us on May 20th for the YaHoo meeting and have some crafty fun and of course food!!

Just as a note our summer reading program starts registration on June 21st and there are tons of volunteer opportunities and fun activities for you as well! So sign up to "Make Waves @ Wharton Library!"

We had a meeting Thursday and made some yummy milkshake/blizzard like treats! We talked about upcoming volunteer opportunities and some summer reading ideas.

Crazy to think summer reading is coming up quickly with all the snow and freezing rain but we'll be seeing shorts and summer time soon!
